The 1984 Los Angeles Olympic games proved to be a great success for Los Angeles and exactly what the Olympics needed. This was achieved thanks to a new fundraising strategy which required companies to pay large sums of money to be without competitors as the sole sponsor of the games along with the introduction of televised advertisements during the event's airings. Budweiser was the official and only beer of the games. The “coincidental” connection between this major televised event featuring monopolized advertising in 1984 and the totalitarian propaganda themes of George Orwell's 1984 feels like that foreshadowing doubling down 44 years later. The Olympics are coming back to LA in 2028. Following the fires this January and the current administration's totalitarian tendencies this connection though humorous, is a deeply concerning "coincidence."
