fallen wood

2025

This installation is a result of the continual exploration of the processing process. Wood is collected, organized, and recombined after having been broken down by environmental and anthropocentric processes. The bark of discarded tree limbs is peeled back to unearth their sweet smelling, knotted cores. Driftwood’s life cycle begins with loss, thrown into the ocean's current; it is transformed by natural forces. Intervening when these pieces are beached by the movement of the tides, the artist recontextualizes them, combining gentleness and brutality. It is like grief, which amongst many things, provides an opportunity to deconstruct and rebuild. These works are made as a way to think about care in the face of loss - care as gentleness, as tidying, as intensity, as control, and as mourning.
